What is Postcrossing

The goal of this project is to allow people to receive postcards all over the world. The idea is when you send a postcard, you will receive one back from a random Postcrosser from somewhere in the world.

The project started on 13 July 2005 by the Portuguese Paulo Magalhaes and it has now become a major exchange with more than 755,000 users from 214 different countries.

Like the founder, there are lots of people who like to receive real mail.
The element of surprise of receiving postcards from different places in the world can turn your mailbox into a box of surprises.

Postcrossing how does it work?

Postcrossing is done with a central website.

  1. Register as a user on the website. (https://www.postcrossing.com)
  2. Login op de site.
  3. Request an adress from the website. The website will pick a random address of another member and shows it to you (you will get it per mail also). With every address you will get a Postcard ID, for example US-123456. The code consists the initials of the country and an ascending numerical code. The complete code should be written on the postcard, and is to be used by the receiver to register the postcard.
  4. Mail the postcard to the address. (Don't forget to write the ID-code on the postcard also).
  5. Once the recipient receives the postcard he will register the postcard with ID-code associated with the card. If the card is registered, the sender can reapply for a new address.
  6. The address of the sender will be given to any other postcrosser in any other country.
  7. One waits until one receives a card.
  8. Register the code of this card on the website.

When there are more postcards of a user registered, the number of postcards that can be send will increase. (in the begin you can send 5 postcards).
